MODERNIST BUILDINGS TERRASSA, located at the foot of the Sant Llorenç del Munt Natural Park, surrounded by a landscape of forests and mountains, is a major Catalonian city that played a leading role in the 19th Century Industrial Revolution. Nonetheless, today Terrassa is more than an industrial city. Its layout reveals its origins and history: a city centre that coincides with the medieval village, the historical ensemble of the Sant Pere churches (near the ancient Roman town of Ègara), the late-19th and early-20th century districts, where there are still many factories and textile mills known as steams (so called because they worked with steam-powered machinery), all of which give the city a personality all its own, with its historic smokestacks, Modernist architecture, etc. Today, TERRASSA is an open, pluralist city, full of inviting sites and rich in artistic and historical heritage that is the end result of a wealth of diverse cultures and origins. It is an entrepreneuring, active city that embraces culture, nature and sport. Terrassa is a universitary, service city which still has industry as the foundation of its economy. Further, it continues to grow demographically. Terrassa currently has a population of 172.807 inhabitants. |
