THE PALAU TOWER

This is the last remnant of the former Castell-Palau of Terrassa.

The Palau Tower, now surrounded by an attractive public square, is the city's most emblematic building, due to both its location in the historical centre and its presence on the municipal coat-of-arms since medieval times.

Firts documented reference to a "Terracium Castellum" dates back to the 9th century. As of the 12th century, the population began to grow up around this fortress, eventually forming the medieval village, surrounded by walls. It was distant from the ancient Roman town of Ègara and the area's other castle, Vallparadís.

Designed on a circular plan, the tower is constructed of stream-rock ashlars. It is 29 metres high and has its maximum diameter, 7.5 metres, in the lower section.

The tower features a large Gothic window in the upper part of the first floor, added after the construction of the tower was completed (16th century).

The upper cornice is the most recent repair or addition, made in 1891.
